Types of champagne

Brut

The essential, the versatile champagne par excellence, the best-selling. Dosage < 12 gr/l. Also called Brut sans année (BSA). Keep for 3/5 years max recommended.

Champagne is a blended wine, it is its DNA.

The three main grape varieties used in the appellation are chardonnay, pinot noir and meunier.

The sugar dosage (liqueur) defines the type of champagne desired:

Blanc de Blancs

100% white grapes (chardonnay). Very fine, delicate, and elegant. Pairs perfectly with seafood, and with some mild cheeses.

Millesimé

Made only from grapes from a single year (in the case of a very high quality harvest). Balance and personality. Extended storage beyond 5 years. Served with dishes with character.

Blanc de noirs

Champagne made from 100% black grapes (pinot noir and/or meunier). Intensity and power. Can accompany a poultry-based meal.

Extra brut

Champagne with a dosage of between 0 and 3 gr. sugar / liter. The purest expression of champagne, the terroir is fully expressed. Minerality guaranteed. Generally served as an aperitif.

Rosé

Made mainly with a blend of red and white champagne grapes. Traditionally accompanies red fruit desserts, or salmon dishes.

Vintage

Exceptional aromatic quality, plot selection. High-end special cuvée. Iconic. Almost unlimited aging potential.

Sec

High sugar content (between 17 and 32 gr/l). This champagne is best served with desserts or certain strong cheeses.

Above 32 gr/l. (semi-dry), or > 50 gr/l. (sweet), these champagnes have a sweet aspect. Not widely consumed at present.

Nature

Champagne with a dosage of between 0 and 3 gr. sugar / liter. The purest expression of champagne, the terroir is fully expressed. Minerality guaranteed. Generally served as an aperitif.
